Opportunities From: Hauppauge Public Library

Everyone wants to feel special on their birthday. Making cards for seniors is an easy and fun way to make someone’s day special. DOROT is an organization located in NYC with the ultimate goal of alleviating social isolation among seniors. They send over 3,000 cards to older adults each year. Sometimes, these cards are the only communication an older adult receives to acknowledge their special day. You can help in their efforts!

Assist library staff during our family program with various helpful tasks, such as: clearing dishes from tables, helping children with crafts, handing out bunny ears, etc. Volunteer spots are limited. (2 hours credit)

For this project, the dog treats must be homemade. Use one of the dog-friendly recipes provided, or find one of your own. Just be sure to include the recipe with your treats so the recipient knows what ingredients were used.

Decorate a terracotta pot filled with dirt and seed packets to donate to senior centers. Presented by Green Earth Crafts. (1 hour credit)

The kindness rock project has been around for a while, but it seems needed now more than ever. If you’re not familiar with it, people paint designs and hopeful, inspirational words on to ordinary rocks. They then place the rocks where people might see them, such as around neighborhoods or on nature trails. The idea is to put beauty and good thoughts out into the world for others to see. We can use all the kindness we can get!

Help the library prepare donated Legos © for shipping. (1 hour credit)

Help the library make our own specialty playdough, which we will use at upcoming classes for children. (1 hour credit per session)

Using pressed flowers, create adorable silhouettes of cats and dogs which will be donated to animal shelters for new adopters. Presented by Theresa Maritato. (1 hour credit)

Create and decorate tote bags made from recycled t-shirts that will be used at local pantries to encourage a sustainable shopping experience. (1 hour credit)

Help create dinosaur-shaped seed paper giveaways, using paper, water, seeds, and molds. (1 hour credit)

Make royal placemats and special decor for the Patrica H. Ladew Foundation’s senior prom for older cats. Presented by Theresa Maritato. (1 hour credit)

Meet new friends and work together to become the voice of the Teen Department. Pizza will be served! (1 hour credit per session)

Help keep the library’s toys clean and in tip-top shape. (1 hour service credit per session)

Warm Up America is a national non-profit organization that provides people in need with hand-knitted and crocheted blankets, clothing, and accessories made by volunteers across the country. Volunteers knit or crochet 7" by 9" sections (commonly known as granny squares) and send them to the Warm Up America office. They collect sections into a box until they reach 500 sections and then send these boxes to volunteer joiners, who join the sections together into completed blankets for donation.
