Opportunities From: Hauppauge Public Library

Meet us on location at the Arbors Assisted Living in Hauppauge for activities with the residents. (1.5 hours per session)

Important Information: 

This event is being held at the HAUPPAUGE Arbors at 1740 Expressway Drive South Hauppauge NY 11788, NOT the Islandia Arbors.

Volunteers MUST respond/signup for this opportunity. There is a maximum of 5 participants per date. No walk-ins allowed. 

We will meet at the front entrance of the Hauppauge Arbors no earlier than 9:45am and no later than 10:15am. 

Volunteers must be picked up at the original meeting space no later than 11:45am. 

If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to the Hauppauge Library staff, not the Arbors staff. 

Everyone wants to feel special on their birthday. Making cards for seniors is an easy and fun way to make someone’s day special. DOROT is an organization located in NYC with the ultimate goal of alleviating social isolation among seniors. They send over 3,000 cards to older adults each year. Sometimes, these cards are the only communication an older adult receives to acknowledge their special day. You can help in their efforts!

Using fabric markers and stencils, design coupon cases to donate to senior citizens. Presented by Theresa Maritato. (1 hour credit)

Join Miss Marley as she sorts and prepares for the library’s craft supply swap. Optional: bring any unwanted craft supplies you have at home that you may wish to donate. (1 hour credit)

Create big dinosaur designs on tiny clothes that will be donated to organizations who help families in need.Presented by Theresa Maritato. (1 hour credit)

For this project, the dog treats must be homemade. Use one of the dog-friendly recipes provided, or find one of your own. Just be sure to include the recipe with your treats so the recipient knows what ingredients were used.

Design adorable bandanas that shelter dogs can wear in their “going home” photo. Presented by Theresa Maritato. (1 hour credit)

The kindness rock project has been around for a while, but it seems needed now more than ever. If you’re not familiar with it, people paint designs and hopeful, inspirational words on to ordinary rocks. They then place the rocks where people might see them, such as around neighborhoods or on nature trails. The idea is to put beauty and good thoughts out into the world for others to see. We can use all the kindness we can get!

Help the library prepare donated Legos © for shipping. (1 hour credit)

Create a paracord bracelet that meets military specifications for our soldiers, along with a camouflage-inspired thank you card. Presented by Green Earth Crafts. (1 hour credit)

Make pencil cases using recycled candy wrappers that will be filled with school supplies for children in need. Presented by Green Earth Crafts. (1 hour credit)

Create adorable treat jars for local animal shelters. Presented by Theresa Maritato. (1 hour credit

Help the library make our own specialty playdough, which we will use at upcoming classes for children. (1 hour credit per session)

Create and decorate tote bags made from recycled t-shirts that will be used at local pantries to encourage a sustainable shopping experience. (1 hour credit)

Help Ms. Marley create sensory bins for an upcoming children’s class. (1 hour credit)

Create tote bags to donate to the North Fork Animal Welfare League for their shelter animal sleepover program. Presented by Theresa Maritato. (1 hour credit)

Share your knowledge of iPads, cell phones, and e-readers one-on-one with senior citizens in the community. 

Meet new friends and work together to become the voice of the Teen Department. Pizza will be served! (1 hour credit per session)

Help keep the library’s toys clean and in tip-top shape. (1 hour service credit per session)

Warm Up America is a national non-profit organization that provides people in need with hand-knitted and crocheted blankets, clothing, and accessories made by volunteers across the country. Volunteers knit or crochet 7" by 9" sections (commonly known as granny squares) and send them to the Warm Up America office. They collect sections into a box until they reach 500 sections and then send these boxes to volunteer joiners, who join the sections together into completed blankets for donation.
